The Mocha Books literacy club was created to support and improve literacy in our homes and our community. The general purpose of this literacy club is to give youth the opportunity to earn a free book of their choice in exchange for a written or oral report of something they have previously read. Readers (ages 5-14) will earn the chance to choose their book at our pop ups, storytime or other community events. We are currently working on how to open this up to children under 5.
One tip that should always be encouraged with young readers - let them choose their reading selection. A love for reading comes from being presented as a gift, not a chore.
Our literacy club books are generously donated by authors and other supporters. Our biggest donation [December 2018] has come from 50 states 50 books - a literacy project dedicated to donating books to expose diverse literature to youth.
