|Book Review| Pinky Promise

{Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are that of my own.}

Reader beware - this topic may trigger any past or current trauma concerning child sexual abuse.

Pinky Promise is a promise between a child and RESPONSIBLE adult. I must applaud the author for emphasizing that this promise is not to be kept with just ANY adult, but one who will be obligated under any circumstances to protect the child and not take their accusations or concerns lightly.

 Pinky Promise is an educational tool that provides narrative and illustrations of realistic scenarios, and demonstrates how some unfortunate behaviors, which children and adults are often oblivious, can serve as a warning signal for abuse.

When I received notification in my blogger group that this book was up for review, I was a bit hesitant for two reasons.

  1. I worried about how the information would be presented to the children.
  2. I wondered if this was the type of book that would fit in with my family oriented blog.

I had the same notion when I received notification for the book, Momma, Did You Hear The News, which discusses police brutality. Unfortunately, we cannot shelter them from neither. It's happening and the best we can do to protect them is to give them the tools and information.

After a brief moment of contemplating whether to accept this book or not I realized that I must! As a youth worker (and mother) it is my duty to bring awareness to this sensitive subject, all of ours! This was important to me because I have had this talk with my children before and I remind them always, to be aware. Family, friend, stranger - just be aware. Keep no secrets and to tell me anything that makes them uncomfortable and that we would always discuss it.

"See a stranger, you're told to yell danger but, monsters come in different flavors."

If you've never had a talk with your children about child sex abuse, or you're concerned about the way you should address it, then I would recommend this book. I appreciate the way that this information is handled. The scenarios create a vivid picture for youth to understand that it can take place ANYWHERE.

My only issue with book would be that I had to ask myself, "Is this too much for them to handle?". You have to approach this in the right manner because you don't want to scare children when you talk to them. You want them to be comfortable to discuss any concerns, but you don't want them looking at everyone with fear. There are some very nasty and ugly people in this world with bad intentions but there are also some beautiful and honest people in the world. To add, I think it was a very nice touch for the author to include this at the back of the book...

I hope that this review will not only raise awareness of child sex abuse, but that you, the reader, understand the importance of talking with our children about child sex abuse. We think that it can't happen in our family, or that we keep our child safe, but there is always the risk. - BREAK THE CODE OF SILENCE.
