AUTHOR INTERVIEW: JALISSA POLLARD

My Grandma Is A Lady

BOOK DETAILS

SynopsisMy Grandma is a Lady is about a young African American girl that chronicles her memories of her grandmother's participation and membership in the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver, a historically black lay organization of Catholics.  Representation matters.  This story resonates with many children of the Catholic faith worldwide.

------------------------------------

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE "MY GRANDMA IS A LADY"?

JALISSA: I wanted to share with you the news of a Black Catholic children's book I wrote and was released on September 13. It is titled "My Grandma Is A Lady" and tells the story of a young girl reflecting on her grandmother's participation in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver.

My grandmother, Mildred "Sis" Charles (age 88)  is a member of the KPC Court from St. Joseph's Church in Broussard, although we reside in Youngsville, LA and attend St. Anne's (Diocese of Lafayette).
Please tell your families in Christ about this great news of our story! I am filled with the spirit of my love for the Church.

WHAT WAS MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT WRITING THIS STORY?

JALISSA: The most challenging aspect of this title was coming out as a Catholic author. Sharing the good news is proper but not necessarily popular. Choosing God over the world is a daily challenge for all.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR READERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS STORY?

JALISSA: African American Catholics are a minority, just as images of dark skinned angels, saints, and African American images of Christ Jesus. My Grandma Is A Lady offers an opportunity to AA children, and especially girls, to see themselves in a faith based text. This viewpoint which is shared by many Americans will shed light on humanizing African American Catholics in their own God like reflection.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT WRITING?

JALISSA: Spending time with friends and family. I love backyard parties, cultural festivals, happy hour specials, bingo, and coffee shops.

ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? IF NOT, DO YOU PLAN TO WRITE AND PUBLISH MORE BOOKS?

JALISSA: I definitely plan to write and publish more books.

LASTLY, WHERE CAN READERS PURCHASE YOUR BOOK?

JALISSA: My book, My Grandma Is A Lady, can be purchased via Amazon.
