Charlotte Watson Sherman

What or who inspired you to write Brown Sugar Babe?

  • Charlotte: I overheard a beautiful brown child call herself pink. It called to mind the black doll/white doll experiments that led to desegregation in public schools via the Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas Supreme Court decision.

  • Charlotte: I pitched the idea for the book during a twitter event called DVpit. When an editor liked the idea, I then had to write the book. I'd read that a lot of editors don't like rhyme, but that was how I "heard" the story.

What do you hope for readers to take away from reading Brown Sugar Babe?

  • Charlotte: I want black and brown children to feel blasted with enough love after hearing this story, that they'll be strong enough to withstand whatever troubles they might face growing up.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

  • Charlotte: Search for the most tasty peanut butter cookie recipe, then eat my experiments.

Who is your favorite author and why?

  • Charlotte:Toni Morrison because she taught us to love ourselves in a world that often doesn't appreciate our brilliance.

Lastly, Are you currently working on anything that you would like to share with our readers? If not, do you plan to write and publish more books?

  • Charlotte: Another picture book, Mermaid Kenzie: Protector of the Deeps is scheduled to be published in 2021.

  • Charlotte: Brown Sugar Babe can be purchased at Bookshop.

Thank you Charlotte Watson Sherman for sharing your story with Mocha Books and our readers.
