Author, Star Jackson was interviewed October 14, 2019 on her journey as a writer and the background of her book.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE YOUR CURRENT TITLE?
STAR: My inspiration to write this book derived from my own personal experience with love. After experiencing my first heartbreak, it took some time but I realized that self-love was at the center of my healing. I was young and infatuated with the idea of being in love with someone eternally but when the relationship didn’t work I was forced to look within myself to find my self-worth. Writing this book was therapeutic for me in the sense that I was able to articulate feelings that accompany the highs and lows of love which has helped me grow intrinsically.
WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF WRITING THIS BOOK?
STAR: The best part of writing this book was writing from full honesty and trusting what I felt throughout the process. It was difficult to become so open in my writing but I now understand the power in vulnerability because writing poetry that comes from the heart is truly bliss.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS WILL GAIN FROM READING YOUR BOOK?
STAR: I hope that people gain the knowledge that self-love is the most vital aspect of learning your worth. When in a relationship, it’s very easy to become infatuated with someone and lose sight of yourself. It is important to journey to discover your true essence and value so that no one may ever come along and attempt to complete you because you are already whole.
IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO FORM A BOOK CLUB WITH YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS, WHICH 3 WRITERS WOULD YOU INVITE?
STAR: Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison and Assata Shakur. I would choose these three Black women because their literary works are empowering. They’ve composed impactful books, shorts stories and novels that have inspired so many generations of young readers.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A WRITER? WHY OR WHY NOT?
STAR: In some ways I have. As a child, I always loved writing and literature but I wasn't fully aware of the possibilities of having a career as an author or an essayist. I also wasn’t cognizant that creative writing is a talent. Once I realized, I delved into the work of writing and I started to honor my gift. Consequently, it’s been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.
NOW, FOR A RANDOM "WOULD YOU RATHER" QUESTION FOR FUN. WOULD YOU RATHER VISIT THE PAST OR THE FUTURE?
STAR: I would rather visit the past. My major in undergrad was History and I have always been fascinated by how the events from the past have laid the foundation for the present and future.
LASTLY, WHERE CAN READERS PURCHASE YOUR BOOK?
STAR: My book can be purchased here: https://www.
Thank you Star Jackson for interviewing with Mocha Books. We wish you much success.
