Morgan Bullock

Journey along with the main character as she goes from being ashamed of her dark skin enough to try to wash it off, to realizing its beauty by changing her perspective and recognizing how beautiful the color brown is. After receiving ridicule like many dark skin people around the world the protagonist believes the ridicule and lies about her dark skin until one day she looks around and sees otherwise.

BROWN. began as a spoken word poem written and performed by Morgan Bullock and after many requests and longing desires from audience members to share these empowering words with their children, Morgan adapted her poem into a children’s book filled with color and vibrancy.

What or who inspired you to write Brown ?

MORGAN: The younger me who wished she had something that represented her and made her feel beautiful at a young age.

Did you face any challenges writing Brown?

MORGAN: When I first wrote the poem, I was very focused on making sure people who looked like me could feel empowered and beautiful. Coming up with things that conveyed the beauty of brown took time.

What do you hope for readers to take away from reading, Brown?

MORGAN: That brown is beautiful everywhere including the melanin in skin. I hope young boys and girls realize this at a young age and grow up not feeling ashamed but proud of their melanin.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

MORGAN: I empower women after breakups and assist them in reaching their personal goals. I am also a motivational speaker or just speaking with my friends. I like to encourage people if not through writing then through speaking or chit chatting.

Who is your favorite author and why?

MORGAN: Maya Angelou - she had a way of eloquently describing feelings that cannot always be put into words. She had command over people with the selection of words she chose. Her life was excellent and eventful you saw and felt that in her writing.
